The US Department of Agriculture last Wednesday granted the approval of Upside Foods and Good Meat, allowing them to sell lab-grown chicken products in the country.
This marks the first time lab-grown meats have been authorized for sale in the US.
The companies’ meat-processing facilities have met the USDA’s standards and will undergo regular inspections, enabling the products to be sold on a larger scale.
Lab-grown meat is created using animal cells in bioreactors, offering a more ethical alternative to traditional meat.
While challenges remain in terms of scalability and consumer acceptance, Upside Foods and Good Meat plan to introduce their products in select restaurants and locations.
In a lay man, what this means is that one can eat chicken without actually killing a chicken.
The chicken cell is collected and monitor and process like a "brewery like product", and make available to people for consumption.
Those that have tasted it confirmed that the lab-meat tastes like a traditional meat.
