In a solemn announcement on Saturday, the U.

S. Navy shared the identity of the Sailor who tragically went overboard from USS Mason (DDG 87) during operations in the Red Sea on March 20.

The lost Sailor was Aviation Machinist’s Mate 2nd Class Oriola Michael Aregbesola, a valued member of the “Swamp Foxes” of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 74. Aregbesola was deployed with a detachment aboard the Mason, which has been serving in the U.S. 5th Fleet since November.

Originally from Florida, Aregbesola enlisted in the Navy in July 2020, and he began his service with HSM-74 in December of the same year.

Commander Eric Kohut, commanding officer of HSM-74, remembered Aregbesola fondly, highlighting his selflessness and dedication to duty. Kohut emphasized Aregbesola's exceptional performance both before and during deployment, noting his deep appreciation for every member of the ship/air team. Aregbesola's legacy, Kohut assured, will live on in the hearts of every Swamp Fox and within the broader community of the IKE Carrier Strike Group. Kohut extended the deepest condolences to Aregbesola's family, acknowledging the profound loss felt by all who knew him.

Mason and HSM-74 are integral components of the Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group, currently deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations.

As we honor the memory of Aviation Machinist’s Mate 2nd Class Oriola Michael Aregbesola, let us also express our gratitude for his service, bravery, and unwavering dedication to duty. Our thoughts and prayers remain with his family, friends, and fellow service members during this difficult time.
