One person lost their life when two masked gunmen targeted a church in the Sarıyer district of Istanbul, as confirmed by Turkey's Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya in a statement on social media.

The incident unfolded in the Büyükdere neighborhood around 11:40 am local time (3:40 am ET) while the Santa Maria Church was conducting its Sunday service, Yerlikaya revealed.

In response to the heinous act, a "large-scale investigation" has been initiated, and authorities are actively working to apprehend the two attackers, stated the Interior Minister.

Turkey's Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc also condemned the attack, announcing that the Deputy Chief Public Prosecutor and two additional public prosecutors have been assigned to investigate the incident.

"The efforts persist in identifying and capturing the suspects responsible for the attack. The investigation is being conducted meticulously and in a multifaceted manner," Tunc added.
