California Governor Gavin Newsom has called on former President Donald Trump to approve federal disaster aid following the devastating wildfires that ravaged Los Angeles, destroying entire neighborhoods.
Despite past political clashes over water policy, Newsom and Trump appeared to set aside their differences when the former president visited Los Angeles on January 24. Newsom, in a statement from his office, expressed gratitude for the Trump administration’s early collaboration in addressing the crisis.
During a White House meeting, Newsom emphasized the urgent need for federal assistance to help affected families rebuild and support ongoing recovery efforts. He also highlighted the strong partnership between local, state, and federal agencies in responding to the disaster.
As of now, the White House has not commented on the meeting.
The wildfires, which raged from January 7 until full containment on Friday, scorched an area nearly the size of Washington, D.C., claiming at least 29 lives and damaging or destroying over 16,000 structures. According to private forecaster AccuWeather, the economic impact is estimated to exceed $250 billion, potentially making these fires the costliest natural disaster in U.S. history.
