Emmanuel Chidiebere Onyeomereneche, a promising Air Force Tarmac Four cadet on the verge of graduating from the National Defence Academy, met an untimely demise.

With registration number NDA 13257, his life was cut short tragically on Tuesday while at Damgrete Hotel's swimming pool in Umuahia, the capital of Abia State.

According to a source who spoke under anonymity, Onyeomereneche had ventured to the pool area for a swim, unaware that renovations were underway. It remains unclear whether he was informed about the ongoing construction before entering the pool.

Rescue efforts ensued after his disappearance from the pool around 6:37 pm, culminating in his recovery by the state fire service personnel at 9:58 pm. Regrettably, despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Federal Medical Centre Umuahia.

The presence of his swimming trunks suggests his intention to swim before the tragic accident occurred. However, the dilapidated state of the swimming pool complicated the rescue mission, compounded by the absence of divers until the arrival of the state fire service.

The confirmation of the incident came from Lt. Innocent Omale, the Army Public Relations Officer (APRO) of the 14 Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Ohafia. This heartbreaking event serves as a reminder of the importance of safety precautions and vigilance, especially in recreational facilities undergoing maintenance.
