Former Kaduna State Governor and founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, has officially resigned from the ruling party.

In a statement released on Monday, March 10, 2025, the ex-Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister announced his defection to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), citing a growing disconnect between his personal values and the APC’s current direction.

Why El-Rufai Left APC

El-Rufai expressed deep disappointment with the leadership of the APC, accusing the party of abandoning its founding progressive ideals. According to him, he had repeatedly voiced concerns about the party’s trajectory over the last two years, both privately and publicly, but his grievances were ignored.

“Developments in the last two years confirm that those in control of the APC have no interest in acknowledging—let alone addressing—the party’s unhealthy situation,” he stated.

Declaring his intent to move forward, El-Rufai reaffirmed his commitment to progressive governance, stating that he would now pursue his vision under the SDP.

El-Rufai’s Contributions to APC

A key architect of the APC merger in 2013, El-Rufai played a pivotal role in uniting opposition parties to form the ruling party. He was also instrumental in the APC’s electoral victories in 2015, 2019, and 2023.

As Kaduna State Governor, El-Rufai championed transformative policies in education, healthcare, infrastructure, job creation, and investment, reinforcing his reputation as a results-driven leader.

His defection marks a significant shift in Nigeria’s political landscape, raising questions about the future of the APC and the potential impact of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) ahead of the 2027 elections.
