In a significant move to improve the healthcare sector, President Bola Tinubu has approved the extension of the retirement age for medical doctors and other healthcare professionals in Nigeria from 60 to 65 years.
The National Publicity Secretary of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Dr. Mannir Bature, shared the news in an official statement on Wednesday.
Alongside this change, President Tinubu has also authorized the allocation and disbursement of funds to settle the outstanding arrears for healthcare professionals. Dr. Bature highlighted that the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate, has been tasked with submitting the approval to the Council on Establishment through the Office of the Head of Service for final confirmation.
The new policy change was communicated by Prof. Pate during a crucial meeting with NMA President, Prof. Bala Audu, and other key stakeholders in the health sector. The coordinating minister confirmed that the necessary payments related to adjustments in the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) will be processed soon.
This landmark decision, which also includes adjustments to the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) as part of the implementation of the new minimum wage, is expected to have a positive impact on the morale of healthcare workers and enhance the country’s healthcare delivery system.
