David Umahi, the Minister of Works, recently opened up about a troubling trend he’s observed since the 2023 general elections.

In a candid conversation with journalists in Abakaliki on Thursday, Umahi shared his frustration over being ignored by many of the individuals he had supported in their political journeys, including members of the National Assembly.

Umahi revealed that despite his instrumental role in their rise to power, these elected officials now seem to shun him. He pointed out that they appear unconcerned about the implications of their actions. "Only Chief Onyekachi Nwebonyi openly acknowledges me as his father and boss," Umahi stated. "The others fear that doing so would anger the state governor, my successor."

However, Umahi was quick to clarify that the current governor, Francis Nwifuru, recognizes his pivotal role in his political ascent. "The governor acknowledges that I was key to his emergence," Umahi added.

Due to this lack of recognition, Umahi mentioned that he has shifted his focus from nurturing political godsons to forming political friendships instead. "I will fight anyone who causes trouble for the governor because he deserves our respect," Umahi declared. He emphasized that he has moved on from the political stage and wishes to maintain his dignity.

Reflecting on the often tumultuous relationships between political predecessors and successors, Umahi stressed his intention to avoid such conflicts. "I am not available for such crises because I have been so blessed in life by God," he said. "When you dig for someone to fail, you have already failed."

Umahi pledged his unwavering support for Governor Nwifuru, committing to stand by him for the entirety of his tenure. He expressed gratitude for the governor’s efforts to unite the state’s leaders and highlighted their long-standing relationship, which spans over 16 years. "I will never regret making him my successor as he, along with a few others, stood with me during the hard decision of defecting to the APC," Umahi said.

In a rare show of political camaraderie, Umahi acknowledged the governor’s continuous honor towards him, attributing this to divine intervention. "That is the handwork of God, and I am grateful to Him and the governor," he concluded.
