A tragic incident has unfolded in Sokoto State, Northwest Nigeria, resulting in the loss of four lives following a clash between Hausa and Fulani residents.

The altercation occurred on Saturday at Jimjimi, situated in the Gudu Local Government Area near the Nigeria/Niger Republic border, as confirmed by the council chairman, Umma Maikano.

According to Maikano, tensions had been escalating in the area in the days leading up to the violent confrontation. Reports indicate that members of the Hausa farming community had noticed the absence of Fulani residents from their settlements, only to be met with gunfire from various directions on the fateful day.

While refusing to take sides in the conflict, Maikano emphasized the importance of protecting the lives and property of all residents within the local government area. However, he acknowledged the loss of two lives from each side amidst the unrest.

The root cause of the clash is believed to stem from a land dispute between Fulani herders and Hausa farmers. A herder, speaking on condition of anonymity, recounted the events leading up to the violence, citing suspicions and accusations leveled against the Fulani community by their Hausa counterparts.

In response to the escalating tensions, the Fulani herder revealed that their leader had instructed them to vacate their settlements as a precautionary measure. However, prior to their departure, the situation took a dire turn as Hausa individuals reportedly attacked their settlement, resulting in casualties and the destruction of property.

The matter has since been reported to the local government chairman, underscoring the urgent need for intervention and resolution to prevent further bloodshed and escalation of hostilities.

As Sokoto State grapples with the aftermath of this tragic clash, there is a collective call for peace, dialogue, and reconciliation to foster harmony and coexistence among diverse communities within the region.
