Former Kaduna State Governor Malam Nasir El-Rufai has filed a lawsuit against Kaduna State House of Assembly member Henry Marah and Channels TV over alleged defamatory remarks concerning a N423 billion loan probe.

The writ of summons, dated July 11, 2024, was filed at an FCT High Court by El-Rufai's counsel, A.U. Mustapha (SAN).

El-Rufai contends that the June 5 interview on Channels TV's "Politics Today," titled "Investigation of El-Rufai Administration," was "malicious, unwarranted, without justification, defamatory and greatly injurious to the reputation of the claimant." He is seeking N3 billion in damages from Marah and Channels TV for the injury, embarrassment, and distress caused by the alleged defamatory statements.

The interview addressed the ongoing probe into El-Rufai's alleged borrowing of N423 billion during his tenure as governor from 2015 to 2023. Marah claimed in the interview that El-Rufai’s borrowings were conducted without due process and the funds were unaccounted for.

Previously, El-Rufai had filed a separate N1 billion lawsuit, asserting that he was denied a fair hearing by the Ad-Hoc Committee on Investigation of Loans, Financial Transactions, Contractual Liabilities, and Other Related Matters of the Government of Kaduna State. This committee was empaneled by the Kaduna State House of Assembly on April 16, 2024.

No date has been set for the hearing of this case.
