Onitsha, Anambra State, witnessed a chilling incident as suspected internet fraudsters, widely known as "Yahoo boys," launched a violent attack on operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The confrontation resulted in the tragic death of an EFCC officer and left another in critical condition.

The deadly encounter occurred on Friday, creating chaos in the bustling city. Eyewitnesses reported scenes of panic as bystanders fled the gunfire, with some sustaining injuries in the commotion.

The EFCC team, reportedly dispatched from their Enugu zonal headquarters, was on a mission to apprehend individuals suspected of cybercrime. However, the operatives were ambushed upon arrival by the suspects, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire.

"Once the suspects noticed the EFCC operatives, they opened fire without hesitation," an eyewitness disclosed anonymously. "One officer was killed instantly, while another sustained life-threatening injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where they remain in critical condition."

This shocking incident underscores the increasing risks faced by anti-corruption officials in their fight against cybercrime. The tragic loss of life has drawn attention to the dangerous nature of these operations, particularly in regions where suspected fraudsters are heavily armed and unyielding.

As investigations continue, authorities are calling for calm and urging the public to cooperate with security agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice.
