An undisclosed number of inmates fled from the dilapidated Suleja Correctional Centre in Niger State following a ferocious rainstorm that wreaked havoc on the facility late Wednesday night.

The tempestuous storm, accompanied by heavy downpour, struck around 9 pm, causing extensive damage to parts of the aging prison center. As a result, several inmates took advantage of the ensuing chaos to make their escape from the compromised facility.

Reports indicate that the forceful winds and relentless rain tore through sections of the old Suleja correctional center, breaching its defenses and exposing vulnerabilities in the structure. The breach in the inner fence, previously safeguarding one of the cells, provided a pathway for the fleeing inmates to break free.

Eyewitnesses from Suleja town corroborated the incident, recounting scenes of pandemonium as authorities scrambled to contain the situation. "The incident is true," remarked one resident, "we assisted in the apprehension of two of the escaped inmates, whom we promptly handed over to prison officials."

The aftermath of the storm has left the correctional facility grappling with the aftermath of the escape, prompting concerns about public safety and the efficacy of infrastructure in safeguarding inmates. As authorities work to assess the extent of the damage and secure the facility, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by Nigeria's correctional system in ensuring security and rehabilitation in the face of natural disasters.
