After several months of controversy, the National Chairman of the Labour Party, Mr Julius Abure has been suspended from the party by Ward 3 in Arue-Uromi, Esan North-East Local Government Area of Edo State.
The suspension, citing alleged high-handedness and anti-party activities, was confirmed through letters dated May 14 and May 15, 2024.
These letters were ratified at a state executive committee meeting on Friday night in Benin, and the suspension was enforced immediately. Abure has been advised to cease representing himself as a member of the party.
The suspension letter was signed by Ward Chairman Thompson Ehiguese and Ward Secretary Stanley Usiomoh. The ratification letter was forwarded to the State Executive Committee by the Local Government Chairman Patrick Onogbeni and LG Secretary Ehikioya Eromosele.
The ratification letter stated: “Here forwarded to you and for your consideration is the ratification of the suspension of Julius Abure from the membership of Ward 3, Arue, Uromi, Esan North-East LGA, Edo State. The LGA Executive met on May 15, 2024, about noon, to consider the matters presented on the suspension and accordingly found them weighty and the suspension ratified and upheld.”
The State Executive Committee, led by Kelly Ogbaloi, endorsed the ward and local government committee's decisions. The meeting was marked by fervent chants from leaders and party members demanding Abure's removal.
The State Executive Committee reviewed the letters and the issues outlined within them, ultimately ratifying Abure’s suspension.
