Operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Adamawa State have apprehended Jeremiah Stephen, a 24-year-old man accused of defrauding traders and POS operators through fake bank transfers.
Stephen, who primarily operated in Michika and Yola, was arrested by the Michika Division of NSCDC.
According to DSC Amidu Nyako, the Public Relations Officer for Adamawa State NSCDC, Stephen admitted to defrauding individuals of up to half a million naira in both Michika and Yola. Stephen claimed that a medical condition drove him to commit the fraud.
Nyako advised sellers and POS operators to verify all bank transfers before releasing goods or making cash payments to avoid falling victim to similar scams.
The Adamawa State NSCDC Commandant, Ibrahim Mainasara, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the case. Stephen is expected to be arraigned in court following the investigation.
