The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed its lack of concern regarding the threats posed by the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, who is seeking legal redress over the recognition of Asue Ighodalo as the official candidate for the upcoming September governorship election in the state.

Last week, Shaibu made a forceful visit to the party's national headquarters, demanding recognition as the authentic governorship candidate. He also raised concerns about facing impeachment for insisting on the proper procedures within the PDP in Edo State.

The dispute arose when both Shaibu and Ighodalo emerged as governorship candidates following parallel primaries held on February 22, 2023. Despite this, the PDP stood firm, declaring Ighodalo as the sole candidate and presenting him with the certificate of return.

Responding to Shaibu's actions and threats, Ibrahim Abdullahi, the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, assured Daily Trust that the party remains undeterred. Abdullahi stated, "We are not worried. We wish the deputy governor well on his journey to the court. We are waiting for him. We cannot continue to run this party like this. Is he the only one who contested the primary? Why is he going on like this?"

Abdullahi pointed out that other aspirants from the same primary have accepted the party's reconciliation efforts. Expressing concern, he questioned Shaibu's refusal to be pacified, stating, "There were ten of them that bought the form; the rest have accepted the reconciliation move of the party. Have you heard any of them say they were coming to the party to ask for a certificate of return? This is a recipe for a crisis. We cannot waste our time if someone is not ready for reconciliation. We have a legal department."
