The police in Ondo State have brought charges against a 24-year-old man, Peter Adebayo, for the alleged murder of his friend, Lekan Raji.
The incident, which occurred on February 23, 2024, at Ireakari Street, Akure, reportedly unfolded after both individuals had consumed substances known as colorado.
According to the police prosecutor, Inspector Taiwo Oniyere, Adebayo purportedly struck Lekan on the head with a cooking gas cylinder following a dispute over the defendant's behavior. The tragic altercation resulted in Lekan's fatal injury, leading to his untimely demise.
"The deceased came home and expressed dissatisfaction with the defendant's behavior, prompting a confrontation. However, fueled by the influence of 'Colorado,' the defendant allegedly resorted to violence, ultimately causing the death of his friend," stated the police prosecutor.
The charges leveled against Adebayo contravene Sections 316 and 319 of the Criminal Code Law, Cap 37 Vol. 1 of Ondo State 2006, as outlined in the charge sheet.
During the court proceedings at the Akure Magistrate court, the defendant did not enter a plea, and the prosecutor requested that Adebayo be remanded at the Olokuta Correctional Centre in Akure pending legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Presiding over the case, Magistrate T. O. Olusola-Olujobi ordered the defendant's remand at the Olokota Correctional Centre and scheduled the next hearing for March 19, 2024.
This tragic incident serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers associated with substance abuse and the devastating consequences that can arise from conflicts fueled by intoxication. As the legal process unfolds, the community mourns the loss of Lekan Raji and seeks justice for his untimely demise.
