More than two days after the Federal High Court granted bail to embattled Nigerian singer Speed Darlington, his lawyers, Deji Adeyanju and Stan Alieke, have accused the police of ignoring the court order by refusing to release him.
Speed Darlington, who was arrested on November 27 on allegations of cyberstalking Grammy-winning artist Burna Boy, has now spent over a month in detention. On Monday, the Federal High Court ordered his release or arraignment within 48 hours, but this directive remains unheeded.
Stan Alieke, in an Instagram post on Thursday, expressed frustration over the lack of public support for his client and criticized the police for their apparent disregard of the judicial ruling.
“We’ve done everything a lawyer should do to get his client out,” Alieke stated. “I’ve reached out to political friends and connections, but people keep bringing up past grievances, saying Akpi insulted them. It’s nonsense. Imagine your brother being in detention for over a month because he allegedly insulted someone, and people are celebrating that he ‘got what was coming to him.’”
He further emphasized the court’s explicit instruction for the police to release or charge Speed Darlington within 48 hours, a deadline that has now passed.
Deji Adeyanju echoed these sentiments on X (formerly Twitter), calling out the police for undermining the judiciary:
“The Nigerian Police have refused to release Speed Darlington, a.k.a. Akpi, despite the explicit order of the Federal High Court. This is the highest form of disrespect to the judiciary.”
The delay has led to widespread criticism, with many decrying the apparent selective enforcement of court orders.
