The Nigerian government has reiterated its commitment to strict clearance protocols for private aircraft, including those owned by prominent individuals such as Bishop David Oyedepo.

Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, addressed the issue during an interview on Channels TV on Sunday, November 24, 2024.

Keyamo’s remarks come amid ongoing discussions surrounding the regulation of private airstrips. The House of Representatives recently called for the revocation of licenses granted to certain individuals and organisations, including Oyedepo, over security concerns tied to alleged illegal arms imports.

Emphasizing compliance, Keyamo stated, “No private plane or drone can take off or land without following proper procedures. It would help if you landed in an international airport first. Then the Customs, Immigration, and NDLEA will process you before you take off from there to your private airstrip.”

He also clarified that the same clearance rules apply when flying out of Nigeria. Private aircraft must first land at an international airport, undergo security checks, and adhere to standard protocols before departing.

This directive underscores the government’s effort to ensure private aviation activities are monitored closely to prevent their misuse for illegal operations.
