A wave of violent attacks, allegedly carried out by armed herders, has left at least 19 people dead in Kwande Local Government Area (LGA), Benue State, triggering mass displacement as terrified residents flee for safety.

The series of assaults began on Saturday, targeting farming communities and escalating over the following days. The first major attack occurred when farmers from Mbandwa Ward were ambushed while returning home via the Kashimbila road. In a horrific turn of events, 16 victims were killed, with their bodies reportedly dumped into the River Katsina-Ala. A local source, speaking anonymously due to security concerns, described the scene as devastating, highlighting the vulnerability of rural communities.

By Monday afternoon, the violence spread to Boaguwa in Kumakua Ward, where another three people were killed. The rising threat has forced many residents to seek refuge in Jato Acka, but even this area is now considered unsafe.

Community Leaders Call for Urgent Intervention

Iorbee Ihagh, President General of Mzough U Tiv Worldwide, confirmed the tragic events during a telephone interview from Jato Acka. He revealed that all six council wards in Turan have been overrun by armed herders, leaving entire communities displaced.

"This place isn’t safe anymore," Ihagh lamented, making an urgent appeal to President Bola Tinubu to deploy military forces and restore order. He emphasized the dire need for immediate security intervention to protect civilians and prevent further loss of life.

Insecurity in Benue State Reaches Crisis Level

The persistent attacks in Benue State, particularly in Kwande LGA, have raised serious concerns over rural security, farming disruptions, and increasing displacement. With residents fleeing in large numbers and communities left in ruins, urgent government action is critical to addressing the crisis.

As tensions rise, affected communities are desperately calling for swift military intervention to curb the violence and restore peace.
