After the friendly between Portugal and Croatia yesterday, a game that ended 1:1, the reigning Uefa player of the year Luka Modric has said his former Real Madrid colleague Cristiano Ronaldo personally told him he deserved to win the 2017-18 UEFA Player of the Year award.
It is to be noted that Modric beat out Ronaldo and Mohamed Salah to clinch the award, which was presented last week Thursday at the Champions League draw in Monaco.
As a result of his snub, Ronaldo was a no-show at the event, with his agent Jorge Mendes later saying that his client not winning was “ridiculous and shameful."
"Cristiano sent me a message, congratulated me and told me he is happy for me and I deserved it," Modric told RTP3 after the game.
"He also said he can't wait to meet me again."
Meanwhile, Ronaldo was rested yesterday because he did not play in the friendly match as a rasult of finding "enough time" in his new club where he is undergoing goal drought.
With this affirmation from Modric, the statement by Ronaldo agent Mendes can not be attributed to Ronaldo personal view about the award.
