On matchday one of the 2023–24 season, there will only be the opening game of the Nigeria Professional Football League in Ibadan.
At the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan, Plateau United and Shooting Stars will square off.
The chairman of the NPFL, Gbenga Elegbeleye, disclosed that the decision is consistent with the tradition established last season.
He added that the decision was necessitated by the Super Eagles match on Sunday, September 10, in Uyo.
“Remember that last season’s opening day fixture was the match in Uyo between Akwa United and Bendel Insurance. The other nine fixtures were played the following weekend, and it is one of the traditions we are bringing into the new league era,” he stated.
The new NPFL season will kick off on September 9.
