In a distressing incident highlighting the urgent need to combat sexual violence, a 200-level student from the Faculty of Law at the University of Ibadan (UI) in Oyo State has been apprehended by the institution's security officials on charges of allegedly raping a 100-level colleague within the campus.
The appalling incident was reported to the university authorities, revealing that the victim, a freshman, had joined other girls for night reading in preparation for their upcoming examinations. The victim, faced with a power outage, decided to relocate from the lecture theatre to the Students' Union building for a brief nap.
Tragically, it was during this moment of vulnerability that the suspect allegedly assaulted her. The victim recounted waking up to a touch and attempting to scream, only to be subdued by the suspect who held her neck down, silencing her voice. Fortunately, luck intervened when another student entered the scene, prompting the suspect to flee.
The victim suffered injuries to her neck, lips (due to a bite), and her private parts during the assault. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the pervasive issue of sexual violence on university campuses.
Confirming the distressing occurrence, UI spokesperson Joke Akinpelu stated that investigations are underway. "Yes, he (the suspect) was with the security unit until late yesterday (Tuesday). I’m not sure he has even been released," Akinpelu reported. She further noted that the incident has been reported to the Dean of Students Affairs, who has initiated prompt action in response to the distressing incident.
This incident underscores the critical importance of fostering a safe and supportive environment within educational institutions and the broader society, emphasizing the collective responsibility to condemn and prevent sexual violence.
