The Oyo State governor, Mr Seyi Makinde has approved the reopening of all tertiary institutions in the state for regular academic activities from September 28.

State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mr Olasunkanmi Olaleye conveyed this approval in a statement issued on Tuesday.

The statement, however, tasked academic boards and Senate of the institutions to fix their specific resumption date from September 28 onwards and put in place COVID-19 guidelines for safe reopening.

Meanwhile, primary and secondary students are to resume classes on September 21, adhering to morning and afternoon shifts format.

According to the statement, pupils from primary one to primary three are to be in school between the hours of 8 am and 11 am while those in primary four to primary six will resume afterwards from 12 noon and exit at 3 pm.

For students in secondary schools, students in classes JSS1 to JSS3 will resume for morning shift from 8 am to 11 am while their counterparts in SSS1, SSS2 and SSS3 will resume afternoon shift from the hours of 12 noon and 3 pm.

Both private and public schools were, however, mandated to constitute COVID-19 Taskforce to be headed by heads of schools and two members of staff.

To ensure social distancing, school heads were advised to make temporary use of spaces like laboratories, libraries and examination hall as classrooms, while also discouraging sharing of items among students.

The management of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, has yesterday disowned a circular purportedly “issued and signed by the University Registrar” on reopening plans, the resumption date for academic activities in the school will be September 21. However, the school has classified the circular as false.

A release by the Public Relations Officer of the University, Abiodun Olarewaju said the Federal Government that shut the institution in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic has not reversed the order.

The statement was titled ‘OAU yet to resume’.

The statement read in part, “The university management wishes to officially inform our students at all levels, their parents and guardians, that the said circular is fake and malicious both in content and context and it should be disregarded in its entirety.

“Obafemi Awolowo University is a Federal Government-owned institution and the instruction to go on recess in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic, in the month of March 2020, by the Federal Government has not been reversed.

“Accordingly, we want to use this medium to urge our students to remain calm, and await authentic information from the university management as soon as the Federal Government gives the go-ahead to reopen the University.”

It will be recalled that OAU suspended academic activities like other institutions as a result of the coronavirus pandemic in the country.

Due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus in the country, which has kept school in active for over 4 months now, the governor Seyi Makinde led govermnent of Oyo State has now cancelled the third term for 2019/2020 academic session in all primary and secondary schools in the state.

Based on this development, students would be promoted based on their academic performances in the first and second terms of the suspended session.

The directive formed part of decisions reached at the State Executive Council meeting on Tuesday.

Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Olasunkanmi Olaleye, said students in terminal classes, including Primary six, Junior Secondary School 3 and Senior Secondary School 3, are to proceed on proceed on holiday from July 30 and resume for examination in the revised academic calendar.

Olaleye said: “The Oyo State Executive Council at its meeting today 21st of July 2020 has approved the academic calendar to guide resumption of schools and other associated educational activities in the State.

“According to the approved calendar, Third Term 2019/2020 session has been cancelled and promotion of students, for all affected classes, will now be determined by First and Second Term Continuous Assessment.

“Pry 6, JSS 3 and SSS 3 will proceed on holiday from 30th of July and resume for their examination as follows;

“Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE)- 10th to 18th August 2020. Competitive Entrance Examination into the Schools of Science- 19th August 2020.

“Placement/Screening Test to JSS1- 20th August 2020. Placement Test into Technical Colleges- 28th August 2020

“The SSS 3 will resume for their examination as soon as WAEC announces the date.

“The 2020/21 academic session, according to the calendar approved by the State Council is as follows;

“First Term- 21th September to 18th December 2020. Second Term- 11th January to 9th April 2021. Third Term- 3rd May to 30th July 2021.

“The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology enjoins all stakeholders and members of the public to take note of the details of the academic calendar.”
