Olumide Ogunsanwo, widely known as Seaking, has been released from KiriKiri Maximum Security Prison in Lagos after being arrested by the Nigeria Police Force for criticizing President Bola Tinubu and Police Inspector General.
His lawyer, Barrister Inibehe Effiong, represented him in court.
Seaking's arrest stemmed from a viral TikTok video in which he invoked divine punishment on President Tinubu, the Police IGP, and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, accusing them of allegedly ruining Nigeria. He faced serious charges including treason, cyberstalking, and inciting violence against police officers.
In a significant win for free speech, a Lagos Magistrate Court denied the police's request to remand Seaking in custody, granting him bail instead. He was required to provide two sureties and a ₦500,000 bond. This decision was seen as a triumph for advocates of free expression, asserting that although Seaking’s comments were critical, they did not pose an immediate threat to national security.
However, Seaking’s release sparked a heated debate when he was photographed without his iconic dreadlocks, leading to speculation that the police may have forcibly cut them off. The incident has drawn widespread attention, raising questions about personal rights and treatment in custody.
