A shocking incident has unfolded in the city of Baltimore, as a bridge spanning the Patapsco River has completely collapsed after being struck by a container ship.

The Baltimore City Fire Department, currently at the scene, reports that seven individuals and multiple vehicles have plunged into the river following the collapse.

According to Chief Kevin Cartwright, director of communications for the Baltimore City Fire Department, the catastrophe occurred around 01:30 ET (05:30 GMT) when a large vessel collided with a column of the Francis Scott Key Bridge. Disturbing videos circulating on social media depict the bridge sinking entirely into the water.

Fortunately, there have been no reported casualties at this time. However, a large-scale rescue and recovery operation involving multiple agencies, including the US Coastguard and various Maryland entities, is underway.

The incident was first reported by a 911 caller at approximately 01:30 am local time, prompting an immediate response from emergency services. Chief Cartwright confirmed that efforts are focused on locating and aiding those who have fallen into the river as a result of the collapse.

As the situation unfolds, authorities are urging caution and cooperation from the public while they work tirelessly to ensure the safety and well-being of all affected individuals. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
