Nangolo Mbumba has officially assumed the role of the country's fourth President. The swearing-in ceremony took place on Sunday in Windhoek, Namibia's capital, administered by Chief Justice Peter Shivute.

Dr. Mbumba, the former Vice President of Namibia, had been serving in this position since 2018. Born on August 15, 1941, he is a longstanding member of the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO). Over the years, Dr. Mbumba has played pivotal roles in various Namibian ministries, including Agriculture, Water and Rural Development, Finance, Information and Broadcasting, Education, and Safety and Security.

From 2012 to 2017, he held the position of Secretary-General of SWAPO, showcasing his dedication to the political landscape of Namibia.

The transition to the presidency occurred following the passing of President Geingob on Sunday, February 4, 2024, at Lady Pohamba Hospital in Windhoek. President Geingob, aged 82, succumbed to cancer after a valiant battle of 82 weeks.

Dr. Mbumba, as the former Acting President, conveyed the sad news to the nation, expressing the loss of a pillar and the chief architect of Namibia's constitution. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, President Geingob passed away with his wife, Monica Geingos, and children by his side.

Condolences poured in from leaders around the world, with Nigeria's President, Bola Tinubu, acknowledging President Geingob as a veteran in the struggle for democracy. President Tinubu highlighted Geingob's commitment to good governance and advocacy for economic, social, and political solidarity among African peoples.

As Dr. Nangolo Mbumba takes on the responsibilities of the presidency, Namibia enters a new chapter under his leadership, and the nation mourns the loss of a respected leader in President Hage Geingob.
