Chad's political landscape took a significant turn as the junta leader, General Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, was confirmed the victor in the country's presidential elections.
The final results, announced on Thursday, May 16, revealed that Deby, who assumed power following the death of his father President Idriss Deby in 2021, secured 61 percent of the vote. This put him well ahead of the second-placed candidate, Succes Masra, who garnered 18.54 percent.
In a notable development, opposition leader Masra acknowledged the council’s ruling and did not indicate any intention to contest it. This acceptance marks a critical step for Chad as it navigates its path back to constitutional rule, being the first among several coup-hit states in West and Central Africa’s Sahel region to hold elections since the recent upheavals. .
