Former US President Barack Obama has reportedly advised President Joe Biden to reconsider his reelection bid, according to a report by the Washington Post.

Citing sources familiar with Obama's thinking, the report indicates that Obama believes Biden's path to victory has diminished and that the 81-year-old president should "seriously consider the viability of his candidacy."

The Washington Post noted that there was no immediate comment from Obama, who served as president from 2009 to 2017 with Biden as his vice president. Obama's influence remains significant within the Democratic Party, and his counsel carries considerable weight.

This development marks Obama as the most prominent Democrat to suggest Biden step aside, joining a growing number of party members expressing similar concerns. The push for Biden to drop out follows a challenging debate performance against former President Donald Trump, which has amplified worries about Biden's age and fitness for office.

Despite isolating with COVID-19 at his beach house, Biden has dismissed concerns about his age and has steadfastly maintained that he will continue his re-election campaign.

However, pressure is mounting. Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries have reportedly met with Biden recently, warning that his candidacy could jeopardize the party's chances in the upcoming November election.

The 2024 US presidential election is shaping up to be a highly contentious race, with Biden seeking re-election amid internal and external pressures to reconsider. Discussions within the Democratic Party are intensifying, with some members advocating for a new candidate to bolster the party's electability against Trump.
