Russia has emphasized the need for a lasting peace agreement over Ukraine, dismissing the idea of a temporary U.
S.-backed ceasefire that could quickly collapse into renewed fighting.
In an interview on Monday, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov stated that Moscow is committed to a settlement that stands the test of time. He expressed skepticism about Washington’s push for a rapid ceasefire, arguing that without addressing the deeper causes of the conflict, hostilities would inevitably resume—potentially with even graver consequences for global stability and U.S.-Russia relations.
“We need a long-term solution that directly tackles the root causes of what has been happening in and around Ukraine,” Ryabkov stressed.
His remarks come after recent Russia-U.S. talks in Riyadh, where both sides agreed to explore avenues for restoring diplomatic ties and engaging in future discussions on Ukraine.
Additionally, Ryabkov reiterated Moscow’s concerns over what it describes as the suppression of Russian-speaking communities in Ukraine—an accusation Kyiv firmly denies.
With tensions still high, the focus now shifts to whether diplomatic negotiations can yield a sustainable resolution or if the conflict will continue to escalate.
