The Kano Fire Service confirmed on Monday the loss of three lives in a phone rescue attempt that gone awry.
Malam Danjuma, a 60-year-old man affectionately known as Black, his son Ibrahim, aged 35, and another individual, Aminu Gaye, also 35, tragically lost their lives while endeavoring to retrieve a cellphone from a pit toilet at Yar’Gwanda Village in Tsanyawa Local Government Area of the state.
Alhaji Saminu Abdullahi, the Spokesperson for the Kano Fire Service, conveyed this heart-wrenching news in a press statement issued on Sunday. Despite the valiant efforts of the rescue team, only one individual, Abba Alasan, aged 28, emerged alive from the ordeal.
Abdullahi recounted the harrowing sequence of events, stating, “We received an emergency call from Tsanyawa Fire Station around 11:00 a.m. reporting that four men were trapped inside a pit toilet while attempting to aid one another." He continued, “Danjuma was trying to retrieve a cell phone that fell into the pit toilet when he became trapped. Subsequently, his son entered the pit toilet to rescue him, only to meet the same fate. Gaye and Alasan also entered in a bid to save both men but found themselves ensnared in the process."
Despite the swift response of the rescue team, the first three victims were found unconscious upon retrieval. Tragically, despite their best efforts, Danjuma, Ibrahim, and Gaye could not be revived. However, Alasan was successfully rescued and conveyed to Bichi Special Hospital for urgent medical attention.
The authorities, including Superintendent of Police Iro Lado at the Tsanyawa police division, facilitated the transfer of the victims to Bichi Special Hospital. There, medical professionals confirmed the heartbreaking loss of three lives, while one individual was fortunate enough to survive.
