The sit - at - home protest ordered by pro - Biafra groups , the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra and the Indigenous People of Biafra , to commemorate the 50 th anniversary of the defunct Biafra nation recorded substantial compliance in Enugu on Tuesday .

Our correspondent, who moved round Enugu metropolis and some sub - urban areas , observed that the town was largely deserted .

There were a few people in the streets , and not many commercial vehicles plied their routes. Some interstate mass transit bus companies refused to convey passengers .

Several private schools did not open on Tuesday , and although public schools were open, attendance was largely poor .

Also , several shops were not opened for business .Most of the road - side restaurants did not open .

Our correspondent observed that compliance with the sit - at -home order was higher among traders and artisans .Few shops opened in major markets , including the popular Ogbete market , and New market. All the roadside stalls around the markets were deserted when our correspondent visited on Tuesday morning .Interestingly , several filling stations did not open.At the Enugu State civil service secretariat , our correspondent observed that a few workers turned up for work.

Most residents stayed home.It seemed like a public holiday in Enugu on Tuesday morning .

However , some shop owners and commercial bus and tricycle drivers defied the order by going about their normal businesses .

Anti - riot policemen and men of the National Security and Civil Defence Corps were seen patrolling the streets to avert a breakdown of the law and order .
