Boko Haram militants have attacked Buni Yadi, the hometown of Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni, killing two sons of a police officer and setting their house on fire.
The assault took place in the Shuwari Baban Layi area around 1:00 am on Monday.
According to local sources, the insurgents targeted the residence of Malam Jibrin, a police inspector serving as the crime officer at the Buni Yadi Police Station.
Reports indicate that Jibrin managed to escape by scaling the fence of his home, prompting the attackers to turn on his 25- and 27-year-old sons.
The militants slaughtered the young men and then set their bodies and the house ablaze.
A local vigilante, speaking anonymously, revealed that the attackers are believed to be operating from the Buk and Talala areas, located approximately 30 kilometers east of Buni Yadi.
“The insurgents arrived around 1:00 a.m. and operated uninterrupted until 1:54 a.m., causing widespread panic,” a source told reporters.
The vigilante further claimed that the same area was the site of a recent ambush where Boko Haram killed an army commandant, several soldiers, and vigilantes.
Residents, already living in fear, say the security situation continues to deteriorate.
“People can no longer sleep with their eyes closed,” said Muhammad Garba, a resident. “With what is happening on the roads and within the town, nowhere is safe.”
The Nigerian military and local authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the attack
