Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court, Abuja, has made a significant ruling in the case involving a Nigerian accused of affiliating with the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
Emmanuel Osase is to be detained for 60 days, as ordered by Justice Ekwo following a motion ex-parte filed by the Department of State Services (DSS).
During Wednesday's proceedings, counsel for the DSS informed the court that the motion was brought under section 66(1) of the terrorism (prevention and prohibition) Act 2022. The request sought an order allowing the service to detain Osase for 60 days while investigations continue.
In his ruling, Justice Ekwo, acting as a vacation judge, granted the prayer of the service and adjourned the matter until June 3, 2024.
Osase, apprehended on March 11, stands accused of disseminating the ideologies of the terrorist group, opposing Nigeria's democratic system of governance, and advocating for terrorist attacks on Nigerian soil and its symbols of sovereignty.
According to the DSS, Osase previously served a five-year sentence for terrorism-related offenses in France and was deported after completing his term. The case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies to combat terrorism and ensure national security.
