The vigilant efforts of the Ekiti State Police Command have led to the arrest of Babatunde Olaoluwa, a notorious individual specializing in the theft of phones from worship centers.
The arrest comes as a relief to the community, putting an end to Olaoluwa's spree of criminal activities.
The apprehension of Olaoluwa occurred on a Saturday following reports of seven phones being stolen from members of the Christ Apostolic Church in Ayegbaju-Ekiti, located in the Oye local government area of the state. Operating under the guise of a church member, Olaoluwa cunningly seized the opportunity amidst the worshippers' euphoric praises.
According to DSP Sunday Abutu, the Ekiti Police Public Relations Officer, Olaoluwa confessed to targeting churches in Oye and Ayegbaju-Ekiti for his nefarious deeds. His modus operandi involved stealing phones from worshippers and swiftly dispatching them to Lagos via motor parks, where his accomplice facilitated their sale. The proceeds were then transferred back to him through online channels.
Further investigation revealed that Olaoluwa had also targeted congregants at the Redeemed Christian Church of God and New Reality Christian Center, both situated in Oye-Ekiti. The recovery of the seven stolen phones from his possession has provided a semblance of closure for the victims, some of whom have positively identified Olaoluwa as the perpetrator.
As the investigation progresses, the Ekiti State Police Command assures the public that Olaoluwa will be promptly arraigned once the inquiry is concluded. The swift action taken by law enforcement authorities underscores their commitment to ensuring justice for the victims and holding perpetrators of crime accountable.
