Nigeria's former president, Goodluck Jonathan, is grieving the loss of his elder sister, Madam Obebhatein Jonathan.



Madam Jonathan passed away on Thursday, January 11, 2024, at the Federal Medical Centre in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, following a brief illness. She was 70 years old.

According to a statement from the former president's media office, the late Madam Jonathan, affectionately known as Amissi, was not only a retired teacher and businesswoman but also a devoted mother and grandmother. Her life was characterized by a deep commitment to serving God and humanity.

The statement, signed by Ikechukwu Eze, highlighted that Madam Jonathan was a devout Christian, a woman of virtue, and a source of inspiration to many, both within and outside her community.

The burial arrangements have been set for Tuesday, February 16, 2024, with the family expected to release further details regarding the funeral rites. Madam Obebhatein Jonathan is survived by three children, siblings, including His Excellency Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, and her mother, Mama Eunice Afeni-Jonathan.


As condolences pour in for the former president and his family, the nation mourns the passing of a woman who left an indelible mark through her dedication to education, business, and service to others. The legacy of Madam Obebhatein Jonathan lives on in the hearts of those she touched throughout her life.
