Over the weekend in Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi State, a legal practitioner named Sunday Ununu allegedly killed an orphan, Nnamdi Nwite Ugo, during the celebration of a community election.
The unfortunate event has left the local community in shock and raised serious concerns about the use of firearms during public events.
The incident occurred during the Izzi Unuphu Power of Attorney community election, which was held in the Abakaliki Local Government Area. This group, responsible for overseeing land transactions within the locality, has been actively recovering lands that were reportedly sold illegally by community members to non-indigenes.
The election was organized to appoint new leaders to manage the group's affairs, and tensions were high as members awaited the results. Ununu, who serves as legal counsel to the group, reportedly began firing his gun into the air in celebration after one of his loyalists was declared victorious.
Tragically, one of the bullets struck Ugo, hitting him on the nose and exiting through his mouth, resulting in his immediate death. The deceased, an orphan with no close relatives, was left without any immediate family to seek justice on his behalf.
Local sources, speaking anonymously, revealed that there is a growing concern that the incident might be quietly covered up. The family of the lawyer and some distant relatives of the deceased are reportedly in negotiations to settle the matter privately. It has been alleged that a sum of money has been promised to Ugo’s distant relatives to facilitate his burial and potentially hush the incident.
The situation has drawn significant attention on social media, where a video of the celebration has been widely circulated. In the video, Ununu can be seen wearing a yellow T-shirt and shooting into the air, a scene that has only deepened public outrage.
