A 40-year-old lawyer, Abayomi Oladire, was brutally attacked by his client’s husband, Kunle Kuteyi, in Ondo City.
The incident, which took place on Sunday, July 14, 2024, around 4 pm, involved Kuteyi stabbing Oladire with a broken bottle. The altercation reportedly stemmed from Oladire's assistance in preparing a divorce suit for Kuteyi's wife.
According to reports from *The Hope*, a state-owned newspaper, Kuteyi confronted Oladire while the lawyer was en route to his sister’s baby naming ceremony. Kuteyi accused Oladire of having an affair with his wife and blamed him for facilitating the divorce proceedings against him. The conversation escalated into an argument, culminating in Kuteyi stabbing Oladire multiple times.
Witnesses at the scene described how the situation quickly turned violent. "We saw the two standing together, and later the suspect hugged the victim and pushed him away. The next thing we saw was the suspect bringing out a broken bottle and started stabbing the victim," recounted an anonymous resident. Sympathizers rushed Oladire to the nearest hospital, while Kuteyi fled the scene.
Oladire provided his account of the incident, explaining his professional involvement with Kuteyi's wife. He stated that she had initially approached him with a judgment requiring her and her husband to pay N2 million each in a separate case. After paying her share, she requested Oladire to prepare divorce papers due to her husband's dishonesty. However, she later decided against the divorce following pleas from her husband’s family.
On the day of the attack, Oladire encountered Kuteyi, who accused him of facilitating the divorce and having an affair with his wife. Despite Oladire’s attempts to clarify the situation, Kuteyi hugged and then viciously attacked him with a broken bottle. "All I could do was guard myself to prevent him from stabbing me in my neck or other dangerous parts of my body," Oladire said, detailing the assault.
The lawyer expressed frustration over the suspect's evasion of arrest, noting that Kuteyi continues to roam freely in the town. "In the course of performing my legal duty, by preparing a divorce for his wife, the suspect attempted to kill me by stabbing me viciously. He is walking freely in the town, and all the police stations in Ondo can’t arrest him," Oladire lamented.
