Yesterday in Osogbo, a heartbreaking incident occurred as an unidentified driver of a mini commercial bus, commonly known as "Korope," lost his life in a tragic accident on the Olaiya overhead bridge in Osogbo.
The unfortunate event unfolded when the bus veered off the road and collided with a parked vehicle, resulting in the driver's death and severe injuries to some passengers.
Eyewitness Mrs. Funmi Adeyemo recounted the incident to NAN, stating that the accident occurred as the bus driver allegedly slumped while behind the wheel. Attempting to regain control, one of the passengers stepped up, but the bus collided with a Toyota Corolla parked on the roadside. Another passenger, in a desperate move, jumped out of the moving bus, suffering injuries to her head and eyes upon hitting the ground.
Despite the chaos, a female passenger managed to steer the vehicle down the bridge before the final collision. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Sector Commander in Osun, Mr. Henry Benamaisia, confirmed the incident, emphasizing that the swift response from the FRSC personnel prevented a potential gridlock on the road.
The injured passengers were promptly transported to the hospital for medical attention, while the driver's lifeless body was deposited at the morgue. Reflecting on the tragedy, Benamaisia urged road users to prioritize safety, emphasizing the importance of avoiding the consumption of drugs, alcohol, or any harmful substances while driving.
This unfortunate incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictability of life on the road and underscores the need for heightened safety awareness among drivers and passengers alike. May the departed driver rest in peace, and may this incident inspire a renewed commitment to road safety within our community.
