The results of the recently concluded presidential election were announced by the pan-Yoruba socio-political group Afenifere on Wednesday.

Peter Obi, a candidate for the Labour Party, LP, was declared the victor.

The All Progressives Congress' Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu's declaration as president-elect by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, was unlawful, according to the leading Yoruba group.

The group made a point of pointing out that the presidential and national assembly elections did not meet the criteria set forth in the Electoral Act of 2022, as amended.

The group specifically charged INEC with flagrantly violating the electoral laws as set forth in the relevant legislation governing the nation's electoral process.

In a statement issued following a special general meeting held at the home of the party's leader in Isanya-Ogbo, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, who insisted that the conduct of the election had broken both the Election Act and the Constitution, it was stated that the election had been conducted illegally.

The group said in a communiqué signed by Chief Sola Ebiseni, its Secretary-General, that the electoral umpire’s willful disregard for the law encouraged electoral brigandage at the polling units.

“That the results of the lawful votes at the election available to the Afenifere through credible sources confirm that His Excellency Peter Gregory Obi, the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, won the said election, and we thus support his decision to challenge the contrary declaration by the INEC."
“That the General Meeting hereby denounces in strong terms and dissociates Afenifere from any congratulatory message in the name of the organization or howsoever to any candidate as illegally declared by the INEC.”
