The Senate has given its nod to President Bola Tinubu's request to dismiss Babatunde Irukera from his position as the Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC).
President Tinubu cited inefficiency as the reason for seeking Irukera's removal and formally requested approval from the upper legislative chamber in a letter. The letter, as per the provisions of Section 8(2) of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) Act 2018, sought the Senate's confirmation for Irukera's disengagement from office, effective January 8.
The move to replace Irukera follows the earlier appointment of Adamu Abdullahi as the acting chairman of the commission by the president. The shake-up in leadership also included the removal of Alexander Okoh, the Director-General (DG) of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE).
This decision underscores the importance of Senate approval in effecting changes in key positions within government agencies. Stay tuned for further updates on the developments surrounding the leadership transition at the FCCPC.
