Awka, the capital of Anambra State, is once again facing a wave of violence perpetrated by gunmen suspected to be cultists.

In the past two weeks alone, over 15 residents have tragically lost their lives, raising concerns of targeted assassinations rather than random violence.

The root of this surge in violence seems to stem from a struggle for control over revenue streams, particularly the collection of taxes from bus drivers and commercial tricyclists. The situation escalated during the Easter period, with six youths reportedly gunned down in various areas of Awka.

Amidst the Easter festivities, the tranquility of the occasion was shattered by the sounds of gunfire, claiming innocent lives and spreading fear among residents. Victims include individuals like Mr. Nwofor, a staff member of the Anambra State Judiciary, who was caught in the crossfire while going about his daily routine.

The violence continued unabated, with more casualties reported in subsequent days. Tragically, even prominent figures like Chief Cajetan Nwokike, a former president general of Amansea community, and Christian, a manager of a popular transport company, fell victim to the ruthless attacks.

The escalating violence has left residents in a state of panic, with the security situation rapidly deteriorating. Despite the deployment of security operatives to affected areas, the perpetrators continue to evade capture, exacerbating the sense of insecurity among the populace.

In response to the crisis, concerned stakeholders in Awka have begun collaborative efforts to address the security challenges plaguing the city. Prominent figures like Hon Henry Mbachu, Mr. Ossy Onuko, and Mr. Anagor ThankGod have joined forces to appeal for urgent intervention from security agencies.

Furthermore, the recent presence of the Special Anti Cultism Squad (SPACS) at Aroma junction indicates a proactive response from law enforcement authorities. However, there remains a pressing need for sustained efforts to curb the escalating violence and restore peace to Awka.

In the midst of this turmoil, the silence of Governor Soludo on the matter has drawn criticism from concerned citizens. While his administration has made strides in infrastructure development, addressing the pressing issue of security is paramount to ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents.

As Awka grapples with this unprecedented wave of violence, the urgent call for decisive action and leadership resonates louder than ever. It is imperative for all stakeholders to unite in their efforts to restore calm and security to the city, safeguarding the lives and livelihoods of its residents.
