A recent call has been made to the Federal Government urging for the unconditional release of all pro-Biafra activists and other individuals detained for advocating self-determination.
This plea aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s promise towards fostering a free society.
The Concerned Igbo Citizens Council (CICC), represented by its interim National Coordinator, Comrade Ukachukwu Obioha, and interim National Secretary, Mazi James Okorie, issued this statement in Owerri, the Imo State capital, stressing the urgency of this matter.
Emphasizing the recent release of Sunday Igboho, an advocate for the Odua Republic, and Omoyele Sowore, CICC commended the gesture while insisting on equal treatment for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and other detained Nigerians with similar aspirations.
The group expressed concern over the perceived disparity in treatment between Igbo and Yoruba activists, highlighting the importance of fairness and impartiality in governmental actions.
Furthermore, CICC called upon relevant authorities such as the Department of State Services, the Police, and the National Human Rights Commission to promptly investigate cases of violence and unlawful detention stemming from self-determination movements.
In urging President Tinubu to extend amnesty to Yoruba youths supporting similar causes, CICC emphasized the injustice of detaining individuals merely for their association with activists already absolved of wrongdoing.
As the advocacy for freedom and justice continues, it remains essential for all stakeholders to uphold principles of equality and respect for human rights, ensuring a fair and inclusive society for all Nigerians.
