The Obafemi Awolowo University community was thrown into an unexpected state as some indigenous people of Ile-Ife blocked the school entrance gate over the appointment of the new Vice Chancellor for the university.
It will be recalled that some Ife groups have been advocating for the appointment of an Ife Indigene as the substantial VC of the school, and they claimed it is only Ife that hasn't produced a Vice-Chancellor despite being the hosting town of the university. They sighted that many federal universities across the country have appointed the indigene of the town as the VC at one point in time, but OAU has never.
Last week, the Governing Council of the university announced the appointment of a new Vice-Chancellor, however, the new VC is not from Ife and this triggered the protest in the university this morning.
