Cameroonian goalkeeper Ange Gabrielle Bawou was the star of the show as Bayelsa Queens defeated TP Mazembe 2-0 in their CAF Women’s Champions League Group B encounter in Marrakech on Thursday night.
Bawou made a number of superb saves in the game to help the Prosperity Ladies bounce back into reckoning after their 2-1 defeat to defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns in their first game.
Bayelsa Queens made a fine start at the Grande Stade de Marrakech, with Chinyere Igbomalu winning a penalty for her side after she was brought down inside the box within 30 seconds of play.
Miracle Josephine Collins slotted the ball home to the delight of her teammates.
Domo Okara’s side doubled their lead in the 24th minute when Juliet Sunday teed up Igbomalu to blast home on her second attempt after her first was rebuffed by goalkeeper Yvonne Obonga.
Bawou thwarted all efforts by TP Mazembe to reduce the deficit after the break, and she was named Player of the Match for her heroics.
Bayelsa Queens moved up to second place in the group following the win.
Victory in their last group game against Egypt’s Wadi Degla on Sunday should see the Nigerian girls make it to the semi-finals.
Holders, Mamelodi Sundowns, meanwhile, maintained top position in the group after thrashing Wadi Degla.
