Eric Chelle has officially released his first provisional squad since taking charge as the head coach of the Super Eagles.
The 47-year-old tactician, who replaced Augustine Eguavoen, has been closely monitoring both domestic and international players. Now, his 23-man squad for Nigeria’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe reveals his early plans for the team.
Big Names Dropped – Fresh Faces Called Up
In a surprising twist, two experienced Super Eagles players, Ahmed Musa and Maduka Okoye, have been left out. Meanwhile, Chelle has included two home-based talents—Kayode Bankole (goalkeeper) and Papa Daniel (midfielder).
Another notable inclusion is Tolu Arokodare, the KRC Genk forward, who earns his first-ever national team call-up. Joe Aribo also makes his return to the squad.
Expert Verdict: “An Underwhelming Squad”
Despite the excitement surrounding Chelle’s appointment, his squad list has sparked mixed reactions.
Solace Chukwu, Site Coordinator at AfrikFoot NG, shared his thoughts with DAILY POST, saying:
“I thought it was underwhelming. Given Nigeria’s delicate situation, it was expected that experimentation would be limited. But nothing about this squad suggests a fresh approach under a new coach. If Eguavoen were still in charge, he might have named a similar squad.”
What Does This Say About Chelle’s Tactics?
Chelle’s squad selection hints at a preference for midfield control and possession-based football. This might explain why Frank Onyeka—a regular under previous coaches—has been dropped.
However, beyond midfield dominance, his formation and overall strategy remain uncertain.
Must-Win Clash Against Rwanda
With just three points from their first four games, the Super Eagles are under immense pressure. A failure to win against Rwanda in Kigali would leave their World Cup hopes hanging by a thread.
“Nigeria’s last visit to Rwanda ended in a draw. Although Rwanda have lost their previous coach, their recent performances against the Super Eagles will boost their confidence,” Solace noted.
“With a new coach in charge, this will be a difficult challenge for Nigeria.”
Can the Super Eagles Deliver Under Pressure?
The stakes couldn’t be higher. With a World Cup ticket on the line, Chelle and his squad must rise to the occasion. Anything less than three points could spell disaster for Nigeria’s qualification hopes.
Will Chelle’s new-look squad be up to the task? Fans will be watching closely.
