According to the UK Mirror, Cristiano Ronaldo is expected to lose at least £5 million as a result of Manchester United's poor season.

When Ronaldo returned to United from Juventus last summer, he took a significant wage reduction.

The 37-year-old surrendered his baseline £800,000-a-week income in Italy for a two-year deal with United at £450,000-a-week.

The contract, however, has a number of big add-ons that will allow Ronaldo to make up the difference.

Many of the add-ons were contingent on United having a strong 2021/2022 season, which has already passed us by.

The Red Devils will finish the season without a trophy and may be unable to compete in the Champions League next season.

Before exiting the Champions League in the round of 16, Ralf Rangnick's squad had already been eliminated from the Carabao Cup and FA Cup.

Ronaldo was set to earn £2.5 million if United won the Champions League, with personal bonuses pertaining to the Premier League – from a title win to a top-four finish – more than doubling that amount.

Given his 18 goals in all competitions this season, the Portugal captain is still expected to earn add-ons for finishing as the club's top scorer.
