According to former Nigerian international Austin Jay-Jay Okocha, Cameroon narrowly avoided being humiliated by Switzerland in their World Cup debut on Thursday.
Although the Africans only allowed one goal in the match, Okocha believed they should have been defeated more severely in the Group G match.
Three of the five countries that will represent Africa at the Qatar 2022 World Cup have lost their opening matches, thanks to Cameroon's loss to Switzerland. On Thursday, Ghana lost 3-2 to Portugal, and earlier that day, the Netherlands defeated Senegal 2-0.
The lone goal was scored by Breel Embelo, who was supposed to be playing for Cameroon but opted to represent Switzerland instead, giving the Europeans all three crucial points.
“It was the best chance of the half, and it could have been the worst time to concede,” Jay Jay said on SuperSport.
“I think the manager couldn’t believe how free Akanji was. "The Cameroonians were lucky not to have conceded there.”
