Lamine Yamal has set a new record as the youngest player to score at the European Championship.

The 16-year-old sensation netted a stunning goal for Spain in their 2-1 semifinal victory over France on Tuesday. This remarkable feat places Yamal in the history books ahead of his 17th birthday, which he will celebrate just a day before the final in Berlin against either England or the Netherlands.

“I only ask to win, win and win,” said Yamal, who was also voted player of the match. “I will celebrate my birthday in Germany with my team.”

Yamal's memorable goal came in the 21st minute, a beautiful curl from around 25 yards out that sailed past France’s goalkeeper Mike Maignan into the top left corner. Reflecting on his achievement, Yamal said, “I don’t know if it is the best goal of the tournament, but it is the most special goal for me because it is my first goal with the team at a European Championship.”

At 16 years and 362 days old, Yamal has broken the previous record held by Swiss player Johan Vonlanthen, who was 18 years and 141 days old when he scored against France at Euro 2004.

“We are very happy to reach the final. Now comes the most important part — winning the title,” Yamal added. “We were in a difficult stretch after not expecting to concede so early. I just took the ball and wanted to put it right there.”

Yamal arrived at Euro 2024 with an impressive collection of “youngest” records and has continued to make history. He became the youngest player to feature at a men’s Euro when he started in Spain’s opening 3-0 win over Croatia. The Barcelona teenager is also the youngest player to debut and score in the Spanish league at 15, the youngest to start in the Champions League, and the youngest to score for Spain.

As Spain heads into the final, all eyes will be on Yamal to see if he can continue his record-breaking journey and help his team secure the title.
