Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro's potential transfer to Manchester United is progressing.

According to a report from The Manchester Evening News published on Wednesday, United is still in talks with Casemiro's agent and believes the 30-year-old is a more realistic target than their top midfield target, Frenkie de Jong.

According to a source, Casemiro feels underappreciated by Real Madrid as a result of the club's £85.3 million summer record acquisition of Monaco midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni.

Casemiro, a five-time Champions League champion and regular for the Brazil national team, is still up for negotiation, so it's unclear if United will be able to sign him.

The player's agent frequently uses United's pursuit of unrealistic goals as a negotiating tactic to increase player salaries.

Casemiro started in Real's victories over Eintracht Frankfurt in the Super Cup last week and against Liverpool in the Champions League final in May, but the additions of Tchouameni, 22, and the 19-year-old midfielder Eduardo Camavinga over the past year have cast doubt on the former Porto player's starting position.

United held discussions with Camavinga while he was still at Rennes last year, but he favoured a move to Spain, and Tchouameni was scouted last season.

Casemiro is under contract at Real until 2025 and played an instrumental role in their Champions League final victory over Liverpool. He started on the bench in Real's opening weekend win at Almeria on Sunday, but he lined up in last week's Super Cup triumph.
