After being forced to leave Brazil's 2-0 victory over Serbia on Thursday night due to an ankle injury, Neymar sobbed on the team's bench.

Brazil's World Cup campaign in Qatar got off to a fast start thanks to two goals from Richarlison, but one of the tournament favorites now faces a nervous wait after their talisman was forced off in the final minutes of the second half.

More than any other player on the field, Neymar was fouled nine times during the match against Serbia, and he continued to play for another 12 minutes after the challenge that hurt his ankle.

Neymar, 30, was replaced with 10 minutes left in the game, and while being comforted by his Brazil teammates, two physios treated him on the bench. Despite this, it was clear that the 30-year-old was in pain because he covered his face with his jersey.

Neymar was also seen clearly limping as he returned to the Brazil team's locker room.

Speaking after the game, Brazil’s team doctor, Rodrigo Lasmar, insisted it is too early to determine whether Neymar will miss the rest of the World Cup with his injury.

"He’s just sprained his right ankle, and it’s already swollen a little," Lasmar said.

"It is important to see how he will respond." We have already started the treatment and we need to be calm and patient.’

When asked if Neymar’s World Cup is in doubt, Lasmar said: "It’s too early to say."

Brazil, who sit atop Group G after their win against Serbia, are next in action against Switzerland on Monday.

‘You have to be calm to define how the evolution will be.’

They will then play their final group game next Friday against Cameroon.
